Tilmann is a peacebuilding expert and an academic. His focus lies at the intersections of law, conflict transformation and human security.

Since 2005, he has been working in many conflict environments, such as Afghanistan, Myanmar, Libya, Ukraine and Colombia.

Between 2018 and 2021, he worked as adviser to the Stabilisation Unit at the German Foreign Office and was undertaking research at the Freie Universität Berlin.

Tilmann was co-founder and Managing Director of several NGOs, including the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law.

Besides his work at JustPeace he is a pro bono director of the Institute for Law and Society in Afghanistan.

Tilmann has written and edited reference works on constitutionalism, non-state justice, and rule of law promotion. For more details, see his website.
