Conflict transformation

About

The Conflict Transformation Programme focuses on the essential question of how societies move from war to peace in ways that are sustainable, inclusive, and rooted in local realities. Instead of relying solely on elite-level agreements, the programme strengthens approaches that recognise communities as active agents of transformation. It bridges divides through inclusive mediation processes, dialogues across conflict lines, and the co-creation of transitional justice mechanisms that address the legacies of violence and oppression.

Working closely with civil society organisations, the programme builds capacities to design and implement people-centred strategies of conflict transformation, ranging from the documentation of war crimes and human rights violations to the reintegration of ex-combatants and community-driven DDR (Disarmament, Demobilisation/Decommissioning, Reintegration) initiatives. These efforts ensure that transitional justice is not a technical exercise but a lived process of restoring dignity, trust, and accountability. The programme prioritises spaces of encounter where adversaries and survivors can meet, while also supporting resilience and resistance when communities face ongoing repression or denial of justice.

Together with its network partners, the JustPeace Lab is observing active, frozen, and post-conflict situations.
